Introduction to Singapore Education System

As with other systems in the world, the Singapore system provides each and every student with a balanced and well-rounded education, developing them to their full potential, and nurturing them into good citizens, conscious of their responsibilities to their family, society and country.

Against the backdrop of a modern and vibrant economy, Singapore is well known for its bi-lingual policy in education as well as business efficiency. Students studying in Singapore can expect to acquire the best skills and knowledge, learning the best of the Western technology and know-how without forgoing the tradition of their Asian values.

Every student in Singapore undergoes at least 10 years of general education, of which 6 years are in Primary school and, 4 to 5 years are in Secondary school. The bi-lingual policy requires that each child learns English and his/her mother tongue ( Chinese/Malay/Tamil etc ). Those academically inclined can pursue two more years of Junior Colleges ( Pre-University ) after Secondary school and then proceed to University. Students can also choose to pursue Vocational Training which equips them with employable skills such as Office Administration, Design & Technology, Computer Application, etc. The emphasis on IT is so great that by now, all schools have achieved a computer-student ratio of one to two. In fact, some of the better-equipped secondary schools have already surpassed this target.
